100 best workplaces for millennials

To determine our second annual list of the 100 Best Workplaces for Millennials, our research partners surveyed more than 88,000 millennials at more than 600 companies that have been certified as a Great Place to Work. This year, digital marketing company Elite SEM takes the No. 1 spot, while Quicken Loans appears at No. 2 and design firm Kimley-Horn is No. 3.

Says one millennial worker at this New York City-based digital marketing company: "It is unusual to have such an amazing group of people all working in one company. Everybody goes way above and beyond to help each other and make everyone feel welcomed. When I first started here, I sent out an email with a quick little blurb about myself. I must have gotten 40 emails back from people welcoming me to the company, talking about things we have in common, and reaching out to help in any way possible. The CEO and the president of the company set up a time to personally meet with you, introduce themselves and get to know you. The work-life balance is another thing. We get emails to make sure we are taking enough time off and using flex hours. Not only do we have unlimited paid vacation days, but there was a new rule implemented that you must take off a full week every year on top of whatever other days you take off to make sure you are getting a solid vacation. How many other companies make a mandatory rule for taking longer vacations?"

"The vacation policy at Elite combined with the family atmosphere makes work life balance absolutely perfect. I responded to an email while on vacation, and was promptly scolded by all four team members on the email thread. Currently I'm covering for a team member who's able to take a 3-week honeymoon for the same reason. Knowing the entire team from top to bottom has your back no matter the circumstance is tremendously refreshing in an otherwise 'always on' space," says another millennial employee.

"I was able to enter the technology team with no experience except for eight weeks of a development bootcamp. After further training from the company, I was able to not only show I could do the job, but in less than a year, I was promoted to team leader. "Kimley-Horn is an excellent place to work and are always placing the needs of the employees first. It is true that Kimley-Horn offers amazing bonus throughout the year and their employees are compensated well, but we also love what we do. We love what we do because Kimley-Horn cares about each and every single employee. Although I have only been here a few years, my ideas, thoughts, issues, and solutions are always taken seriously. The reason for this is because of the people in our firm. We have amazing staff that will take the time to listen—no matter how busy they are. "People are generally super friendly, genuine, and helpful to each other," says an employee at this management consultant. "Within hours of starting on my first day, I met high-level executives who went out of their way to introduce themselves to me and make themselves available for any questions I had."

Adds another millennial: "The culture of our company is truly unique. Our people look out for each other and put effort into relationships beyond work. To say we have a work-life balance is an understatement. We know how to get work done but also self-govern and respect our time in our personal lives. That comes with compassion and understanding from other Point B'ers which makes our place feel like home, not a place we go for our job."

"The sense of community at Workday is amazing. Whether it be seasoned developers or fresh out of college young professionals, we all collaborate at a pace that works for everyone. The playing field is flat and allows new developers to work with experienced developers without feeling out of place. I feel my team and my manager are truly dedicated to helping one another individually and collectively to accomplish our goals with time to spare—which usually goes towards something fun!" says one millennial employee.

I can spend time with my family and pursue other goals and ambitions outside of work. I have a lot of autonomy in my work so I don't have to be tied to my office 10 hours every day. "Strong support from executive leadership. True advocates for the employees. Not looking for any bit of extra profit for personal gain. Continually maintain bonuses, medical benefits, etc. instead of buying a company jet or island on the Bahamas. :)" says one millennial employee.

"Management is open to listening to everyone. I feel as a newer employee, I still have the same level of input as a seasoned WWT employee," says another millennial.

According to one millennial: "I couldn't imagine working a better company than Acuity. First, the work I do here is very fulfilling, my contributions not only get recognized but I feel a sense of pride and accomplishment in what I do. My manager is a great person to work for; he listens to any concern or idea I may have and acts on it in an appropriate manner. I can ask him any question without feeling dumb or worried that my words will not matter. Acuity as a company treats it's employees exceptionally well. How many other companies automatically contribute 8% to employee's 401K (normally it's even more than that), have quarterly free breakfasts, quarterly massages, weekly gifts of some sort, and lunch with vice presidents to stay connected with what the company is doing and address our concerns. In addition, the quarterly Town Hall meetings gives employees insight into what the company is doing; there is always communication between upper management and employees, making us feel important and heard in the company. I really enjoy working for Acuity and appreciate everything they do for me as an employee. I plan on being here for the long term future!"

"They expect 110% from us, but in return give 110% back to us," says a millennial at the motorcycle gear retailer. "We are taken into consideration regarding almost every decision or change and have opportunity to give feedback before any changes or transitions are made to make them painless. Hard work goes noticed and is given recognition and management keeps an open door to discuss almost anything," explains one millennial employee.

Says another millennial employee: "The things that are unique about working at RevZilla are that the partners and hiring managers care about their employees and are constantly asking for our feedback to make sure that everyone is on the same page. I have never before worked at a company that is as transparent to their employees. They want everyone to know what their plans are for the future of the company."
