Named for its location at the midpoint of a historic route from the Atlantic Ocean to the Chesapeake Bay, Middletown has long served as a convenient landing spot for travelers in the region. Today, it sits between Wilmington, 27 miles to the north, and Delaware capital Dover, 27 miles south.

The town has seen substantial population growth over the past two decades and lies within New Castle, one of the state’s fastest-growing counties. Part of the attraction likely comes from Middletown’s low crime rates and good public schools.

Fifty percent of Middletown’s Appoquinimink district schools rank above average, according to GreatSchools, and 95% of its students graduate from high school. Despite being Delaware’s fastest-growing school system, expansions and new educational sites haven’t hampered the district’s ability to uphold high standards, as its schools still surpass the state average when it comes to criteria such as SAT scores and Advanced Placement course participation. The town is also home to well-known boarding school St. Andrew’s, the setting of the 1989 movie Dead Poets Society.

Downtown’s Main Street hosts arts and cultural events that bring the community together throughout the year. One of Middletown’s signature attractions is its Olde-Tyme Peach Festival, held every summer for the past 30 years as a way to celebrate local artists, crafts, food, music, and peaches—with a peach pie contest, of course.—KR
