With two area colleges, St. Martin’s University and South Puget Sound Community College, the town of Lacey, Wash., has a youthful vibrancy inside its urban corridors, yet is also surrounded by nature everywhere you look.

Active-minded residents can enjoy parks, lakes, golf courses, and access to the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge—thousands of acres of protected land for hiking, bird-watching, wildlife viewing, and more—just a short 15-minute drive to the east.

“Clean air and water, outstanding schools, and a low crime rate make the City of Lacey one of the most desirable places in the country to live,” according to the local government’s website. In fact, the city has shown a commitment to sustainability in recent years. In 2020, Lacey and other Thurston County cities worked with regional planning councils to strategize how to reduce their contributions to greenhouse gasses while maintaining quality of life for its residents. The Thurston County Climate Mitigation Plan that resulted from these efforts was put into place in 2021, which helps make Lacey a leader in environmentally friendly energy use and development.—AS
