MetLife is one of the world’s largest providers of insurance, annuities, and employee benefits. Based in New York, MetLife sells insurance coverage through employers, offering life insurance, disability insurance, plus dental and vision plans. Founded in 1868 in the aftermath of the American Civil War, MetLife at one point became the nation’s largest life insurer. In 2017, MetLife stopped selling life insurance to individual policyholders in the U.S., spinning off its U.S. retail insurance business into a separate publicly listed company called Brighthouse Financial.
