MetLife, the largest life insurance provider in the U.S., reported lower revenue and profit in 2022, as the company's finances were a victim of the year’s economic uncertainty. The company brought in $69.9 billion in revenue (down 1.7%) and $2.5 billion in profit (down 61.3%).

MetLife is the largest life insurance provider in the U.S. and serves 100 million customers in nearly 50 countries. MetLife’s revenues for 2021 were up almost 5% over 2020, to $71.1 billion, and profits rose 21.2%, as strong gains in the insurer’s investment portfolio helped offset the impact of high payouts for deaths related to COVID-19. In 2022, MetLife announced diversity, equity, and inclusion commitments that include spending $5 billion with diverse suppliers by 2030 and committing $150 million in funding through the MetLife Foundation to support underserved and underrepresented communities over that same time span.

Like many insurers, MetLife felt the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on a financial level. Claims and payouts for life insurance policyholders rose as millions around the world died from COVID-19; a decrease in claims related to dental, property, and auto insurance, with customers stuck at home, wasn’t enough to counter the financial impact of those tragedies. Overall, revenues fell 2.6% to $67.8 billion, while profits dropped 8.3% from 2019. But if any business takes the long view, it’s insurance; in fact, at 153 years old, MetLife is one of the rare companies functioning today that also weathered the 1918 flu pandemic. CEO Michel Khalaf now says, “The worst impact of the pandemic on our business performance is behind us.”

Global business is back. After limping through a worldwide financial crisis and economic slowdown, the 500 largest companies ranked by revenues shattered all sorts of performance records in 2013: They racked up combined revenues of $31.1 trillion, up 2.5% from 2012, and profits soared 27% to nearly $2 trillion. China’s 95 companies (up from 89 last year) posted $5.8 trillion in revenues. The U.S. has four fewer companies on the list than last year but remains (for now) the country leader, with 128 corporations on the list—including No. 1 Wal-Mart Stores—reporting $8.6 trillion in revenues. 

Wal-Mart stayed on top as its sales crept closer to half-a-trillion dollars. Apple moved into the top five. And UnitedHealth Group continued its steady climb.

With that, I will turn the call over to John Hall, Global Head of Investor Relations.

Thank you, operator. Good morning, everyone. We appreciate you joining us for MetLife's fourth quarter twenty twenty four earnings and near term outlook call. Before we begin, I point you to the information on non GAAP measures on the Investor Relations portion of metlife.com, in our earnings release and in our quarterly financial supplements, which you should review. On the call this morning are Michelle Halaf, President and Chief Executive Officer and John McCallion, Chief Financial Officer and Head of MetLife Investment Management.

Also participating in the discussion are other members of senior management. Last night, we released a set of supplemental slides which address the quarter as well as our near term outlook. They are available on our website. John McCallion will speak to those supplemental slides in his prepared remarks. An appendix to the slides features outlook sensitivities, disclosures, gap reconciliations, and other information, which you should also review.

Thank you, John, and good morning, everyone. Last night, MetLife reported fourth quarter and full year results that underscore the strength and resilience of our market leading portfolio of businesses in the face of constant change. While unemployment in The U. S. Has stayed at low levels and economic growth appears healthy, the path and pace of anticipated interest rate cuts remain in question due to concerns about persistent inflation.

MetLife's capacity to execute across changing environments has been a hallmark of our success. This past year 2024 brought to a close the five year period associated with our next horizon strategy. Despite the global pandemic, a short lived banking crisis and volatile interest rates, we delivered on all our next horizon financial commitments, return on equity, free cash flow and operating leverage. The market has recognized our strong fundamental performance as MetLife's stock outperformed the Standard and Port 500 index in 2024. MetLife did not go quietly into the end of the year and we do not rest on our laurels.
