MetLife is the largest life insurance provider in the U.S. and serves 100 million customers in nearly 50 countries. MetLife’s revenues for 2021 were up almost 5% over 2020, to $71.1 billion, and profits rose 21.2%, as strong gains in the insurer’s investment portfolio helped offset the impact of high payouts for deaths related to COVID-19. In 2022, MetLife announced diversity, equity, and inclusion commitments that include spending $5 billion with diverse suppliers by 2030 and committing $150 million in funding through the MetLife Foundation to support underserved and underrepresented communities over that same time span.

Like many insurers, MetLife felt the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on a financial level. Claims and payouts for life insurance policyholders rose as millions around the world died from COVID-19; a decrease in claims related to dental, property, and auto insurance, with customers stuck at home, wasn’t enough to counter the financial impact of those tragedies. Overall, revenues fell 2.6% to $67.8 billion, while profits dropped 8.3% from 2019. But if any business takes the long view, it’s insurance; in fact, at 153 years old, MetLife is one of the rare companies functioning today that also weathered the 1918 flu pandemic. CEO Michel Khalaf now says, “The worst impact of the pandemic on our business performance is behind us.”

Global business is back. After limping through a worldwide financial crisis and economic slowdown, the 500 largest companies ranked by revenues shattered all sorts of performance records in 2013: They racked up combined revenues of $31.1 trillion, up 2.5% from 2012, and profits soared 27% to nearly $2 trillion. China’s 95 companies (up from 89 last year) posted $5.8 trillion in revenues. The U.S. has four fewer companies on the list than last year but remains (for now) the country leader, with 128 corporations on the list—including No. 1 Wal-Mart Stores—reporting $8.6 trillion in revenues. 

Wal-Mart stayed on top as its sales crept closer to half-a-trillion dollars. Apple moved into the top five. And UnitedHealth Group continued its steady climb.

Before we begin, I'd point you to the information on non GAAP measures on the Investor Relations portion of metlife.com, in our earnings release and in our quarterly financial supplements, which you should review. On the call this morning are Michel Halaf, President and Chief Executive Officer and John McCallion, Chief Financial Officer and Head of MetLife Investment Management.

Also participating in the discussion are other members of senior management. Last night, we released a set of supplemental slides, which address the quarter as well as the risk transfer transaction we also announced yesterday. They are available on our website. John McCallion will speak to those supplemental slides in his prepared remarks. Thank you, John, and good morning, everyone. A few months ago, we rolled out our New Frontier strategy to guide MetLife over the course of the next five years. As you will recall, a keystone of our new frontier strategy is the all weather nature of our market leading set of businesses. And once again, after powering through the supply and mortality challenges of COVID and then bank liquidity concerns, we find our strategic diversification put to the test. As we move through 2025 with the odds of a recession on the rise, we are seeing unprecedented volatility in the daily trading of The U.
