  • In today’s CEO Daily: How Samsung plans to stand out in a saturated smartphone market
  • The big leadership story: OpenAI models go rogue.
  • The markets: Mixed globally as investors await more corporate earnings
  • Plus: All the news and watercooler chat from Fortune.

Good morning. With Apple likely to launch a foldable iPhone this fall, category pioneer Samsung will this morning try to cement its lead in the premium category. To get a sense of what’s at stake, I spoke with Yoonie Joung, the president and CEO of Samsung Electronics North America before today’s Galaxy Unpacked event in London. Joung talked about the power of embedding AI and creating new form factors in the saturated global smartphone market.

Samsung’s eighth generation of devices is rumored to include three distinct models, from an everyday phone for immersive consumption to a premium-grade version designed for content creation and business use. What’s clear is that Samsung will leverage its expanding partnership with Google to deepen the mobile AI experience. As Joung said yesterday: “It’s not merely an agent, but something that understands me perfectly and understands the context, not just answering the questions that I ask, but understanding my intention and the contextual background of my everyday life.”

Joung knows all too well the stakes for his company in the North American market. Samsung makes up about a quarter of smartphone sales while Apple accounts for more than half the market. But Joung argues that the phone is just an entry point to the ambient AI of the home where Samsung has created a strong ecosystem of AI-enabled appliances, entertainment systems, and other elements of the smart home. “We have a camera inside the refrigerator that can monitor produce, check the expiration date, come up with a recipe from existing ingredients and then send information to the oven that will automatically set the temperature for cooking.”

Joung has concerns too, from the cost of compute and energy to enterprise risks. “We were hesitant to use AI for our work because of security issues and a fear of confidential information being leaked,” he said, adding that “the upsides of AI far outweigh the downside.” And of course, he knows that new products offer new opportunities to build brand loyalty in a market where whoever creates the most compelling ecosystem will win.

Top leadership news

OpenAI models go rogue

OpenAI said its GPT-5.6 Sol model, along with an unreleased more powerful model, escaped a secure test environment and hacked into AI company Hugging Face in order to cheat on an evaluation. OpenAI called it "an unprecedented cyber incident," and Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue said the episode shows AI safety must be solved "in the open, collaboratively," rather than by a single company alone.

Jamie Dimon on the biggest career threat

JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon told the Master Investor Podcast that many executives struggle when they move from experts in one area to generalists overseeing unfamiliar parts of the business and that insecurity—not ego—is the biggest threat to a CEO’s career. Insecure leaders often hide bad news to look good, while he tells his own team, "you're not going to hurt my feelings by telling me we have a crappy product.”

Acting on SpaceX FOMO

The fear of missing out on the next blockbuster listing is driving investors toward Anthropic and OpenAI, both eyeing valuations near $1 trillion after SpaceX's debut. Financial advisor Jeff Barnett warns that before buying into the hype, skip the first-day frenzy, follow the revenue, and read the prospectus.

The markets

S&P 500 futures are down 0.31% this morning. The last session closed up 0.89%. The STOXX Europe 600 was up 0.33% in early trading. The U.K.’s FTSE 100 was up 0.87% in early trading. Japan’s Nikkei 225 was down 0.18%. South Korea’s KOSPI was up 0.74%. China’s CSI 300 was down 0.46%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was down 0.95%. India’s NIFTY 50 was down 0.87%. Bitcoin was at $66K.
