New York City may be home to Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, but the Big Apple is nowhere near the top choice for travelers this holiday weekend.
The No. 1 choice for Thanksgiving is Las Vegas, according to the 2016 AAA Thanksgiving Holiday Travel Forecast. West Coast cities make up half of AAA’s 10 most popular destinations. New York City is No. 5, after San Francisco (N0.2), San Diego (No.3), and Orlando (No.4).

An estimated 48.7 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home this Thanksgiving—an increase of 1 million travelers when compared with 46.9 million in 2015. This year’s number is the highest it’s been since 2007, notes AAA.

The reason? Improvements in the economy, such as rising wages, increased consumer spending, and overall strength in consumer confidence, according to AAA. And thanks to cheap gas prices, more than 89% of travelers will go by car this year.
