20 Best Workplaces for Gen X'ers
The Top Ten
Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants
Hospitality
"It is amazing how quickly people become a part of the culture," says a Gen X employee. "One of our bellman delivered a Kimpton moment shortly after starting and while in training. As he was standing outside of the hotel, he heard a taxi driver yelling at someone who had exited the cab and walked into the hotel. He found out it was one of our employees who he did not know and that the taxi was waiting for her to get change from inside. We had just opened so getting change was not as easy as it currently is. To diffuse the situation, the brand new bellman paid the full fare to get the irritated taxi driver off of our property. The bellman didn't ask who the coworker was nor did he ask if he would be reimbursed. Of course, we reimbursed him. But it was a really great thing seeing that he was willing to help a coworker whom he did not know and he felt empowered to do so. The people here are second to none." Says another Gen X'er: "Within a few weeks of being hired, the company wide Finance/HR/IT/Facilities conference was taking place and I was to attend. I thought I wouldn't know anyone. Without my knowledge my boss had shared a personal resume and biography about me with all of the other finance attendees. When I arrived, people knew who I was and had details about my past work experience, some of the things I liked, where I had lived etc. It made me feel right at home and as if I was returning somewhere I had not been in quite a while and was catching up with friends." Quicken Loans
Financial Services & Insurance
"Quicken Loans cares deeply about its team members," says a Gen X employee at the mortgage lender. "I have never felt so supported by a company before.. We are provided with high quality training in a wide variety of areas, allowed paid time off to volunteer, mentoring opportunities and a fantastic location to work in." Says another Gen X'er: "Quicken Loans is a unique and, without doubt, a great place to work. The benefits, the camaraderie and the freedom are unmatched from any other company I have worked for in the past or have heard of from close friends and family. The work culture is accepting of different personalities, yet challenges each individual to do their best. One of the practices that sets Quicken Loans apart from all other companies is the Bullet Time — it's a Monday afternoon that's reserved for all technology team members to participate in any technology initiative regardless of their area of expertise. Ultimate Software
Information Technology
Says one Gen X'er: "Ultimate Software is a company that is the absolute best at putting its employees first. First example, they still pay 100% of the medical for every single full-time employee and their families. The company has been on a growth pattern with respect to new employees and the benefit hasn't even changed...and we are making money. That, to me, is truly unique (and unusual). I have been here for 14+ years, through hiring freezes and times when most other tech companies were finding ways to make some money by essentially laying off their workforce. I thought this benefit has to go at multiple points while at Ultimate, but it never budged. On top of that, today the company keeps stacking on the benefits, like team building budgets, team trips, food, exercise and diet professionals, money for exercising, discounts for healthy food, (they are really putting an emphasis on living healthy), training budget, tech gadget budget, to name just a few. The payoff for all the unique and unusual benefits is that their employees want to 'care back' and they put in whatever they can for the company. They work very hard for their company. I see that on many levels from my own dedication and commitment to my colleagues to the directors." Ultimate Software also appears at No. 5 on the list of the 100 Best Workplaces for Millennials.
