20 best workplaces for baby boomers

To determine our first-ever ranking of the 20 Best Workplaces for Baby Boomers, our research partners surveyed more than 34,000 employees aged 51 and above who work at more than 600 companies with Great Place to Work certification. Michigan-based auto financing company Credit Acceptance appears at No. 1, followed by David Weekley Homes and Workday.

Says one baby boomer at this financial advisor: "I had to take a 10 month leave of absence due to medical reasons. Our office kept my job open for me until I could return. People pitched in to fill the need while I was gone. There are not many companies out there would do that for their employees!!! Other people (outside of Baird) were amazed!"

According to one baby boomer employee: "There are many unique and unusual attributes of this company. It is a rewarding company as well as a fun organization to work for. Coming to work is a pleasurable experience, unlike some other companies I have worked for. The compensation package we receive as employees is outstanding, from the salary we receive, to the contributions the company makes to our 401K program, to the annual bonus we receive, and the exceptional healthcare program we are under. Not only is it a fun place to work but a very rewarding one also."

Says another baby boomer: "The company is very employee friendly. Seems like management goes out of its way to make this an enjoyable place to work. Simple things like ping pong tables, free popcorn, and massages. There are regular gifts to the employees, often sweets like chocolates which go over very well. The officers periodically serve a free breakfast to the employees. There are bi weekly social hours every even Thursday to get employees together in a non-work environment. The biggest thing to me though is the great financial results Acuity turns in. Growth and profitability. This provides for a secure work place. People don't get laid off around here. The 401(k) contribution by Acuity for each employee, whether they contribute or not, is fantastic. I've worked for another company before Acuity (and I worked for Acuity before the current management team) and there is no comparison. This is a great place to work!"

Says one baby boomer at this law firm: "The firm has a program called "Clients First," which involves a short social/business/information meeting on each floor every morning (staff and attorneys). This meeting gives everyone an opportunity for interaction and a heads-up on any special projects in which the firm or staff may be involved. The folks I work with and depend upon (and who depend upon me) are wonderful folks. The work environment is comfortable. We have great latitude in dress with, of course, casual Fridays. Also, we will have a "jeans day" periodically to raise money for charity— $5.00 to wear jeans to work for a day. The company provides great benefits and management allows as much flexibility as possible in time-off requests and makes an attempt to keep all staff informed as to its goals and progress."

They are alsdo focused on developing next-gen leaders and have well conceived programs to do that. They have really done a nice job with recognition programs for team members. Says one baby boomer employee at this software company: "Recognizing that people are at different stages of life and have unique needs, management has made available an Employee Assistance Program to confidentially help employees with family, medical, legal, or several other categories of life issues. To aging baby-boomers, this has proven invaluable. The main campus has a long list of unique benefits, like on-site daycare, a health care facility with on-site doctors and nurses, a recreation facility with swimming pool, basketball, and tennis courts, a variety of high quality, low cost cafes at which to eat. But effort is also made to provide equivalent benefits in the regional offices where on-site facilities aren't cost effective, such as memberships to day care or recreational businesses. Those of us in regional offices have enjoyed small-business intimacy with big-business benefits."

According to another boomer: "The company is diligent about investing for the long term, and not subjecting itself to the whimsy of the markets. We didn't lay people off during the financial crisis, and we're doing a lot of research into computing paradigms that are still on the drawing boards."

Says one baby boomer: "The company shares in its success. There have been two 5-year challenges in which all goals were met. The company rewarded all employees for both challenges. This year was the second 5-year and the company rewarded all employees with the same cash benefit from the President down to the receptionist got $100,000 per person, depending on tenure. This is in a downturn period in the oil &amp; gas industry. This shows the commitment to its employees. Hilcorp has an open book management style where everyone knows the company's financial standings. Hilcorp allows its employees to investment their own money as well. The employee benefits monthly from the revenue of each property as well as increase wealth with an increase in the reserve base. Upon retirement, Hilcorp pays out the vested interest in all vested properties. When Hilcorp wins we all win."

We are not afraid to try new things and to keep changing in a changing world. The organization also provides great benefits, but most especially its 403(b) retirement savings program."
