<p class="p1">To determine this year’s ranking of the best small business employers, our research partners at workplace consultant <a href="http://www.greatplacetowork.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Great Place to Work</a> surveyed more than 88,000 workers at 540 companies that have between 25 and 999 employees.</p>

At this Huntsville, Ala.-based engineering company, almost every employee surveyed spoke highly of management, saying that the company seeks to take care of employees. Throughout the year, employees enjoy on-the-spot bonuses, Thanksgiving bonuses tied to company and individual performance and a March profit-sharing program. Flexible scheduling, like compressed workweeks and job sharing, are also available.  and <a href="http://fortune.com/2015/10/21/intuitive-research-technology/" target="_blank"><em>Fortune</em>’s story</a> on the company.

Atlassian is a blend of humor and serious follow-through, evident in its guiding principles which include "Don't #@!% the Customer" and "Open Company, No Bullshit." That mentality extends to its employees, who work hard but don't take themselves too seriously. They describe the company as friendly, direct and collaborative. Plus, Atlassian offers a slew of other perks, including a beer car on Fridays, a paid week to volunteer, a free daily lunch service and unlimited vacation with their manager's approval. "The company values really matter at Atlassian," said one employee. "Not only does management talk about the values, but staff at all levels of the organization discuss them and integrate them into their work."

At the Rochester, NY-based credit union with 20 locations, 508 of its 681 employees and 71% of executives are female. "First and foremost, ESL seeks employees who truly fit our unique culture. This is paramount to success in our organization, regardless of the position," according to an employee."

Nearly three-quarters of 4imprint employees are women. The majority women-workplace has built a culture where employees are friendly, conscientious and caring—all attributes that the promotional products company looks for in prospective new hires. Helping to make employees happy: options for telecommuting, compressed work weeks, and generous bereavement leave. The company's "Donate PTO Time" program allows associates to donate a portion of their accumulated paid time off to assist an associate who is in need. The identity of all donors shall remain confidential and the recipient shall is not told the identity of the donors.

The workforce at Squarespace is young: almost 90 percent of employees are below 35. And the company is good at making sure its employees have fun, with an Experience Team that oversees group outings and puts the company credit card on file at bars and restaurants around the office. Employees enjoy free breakfast, lunch and take-home meals daily, too, but they especially rave about their flexible schedules. "I'm often able to leave work in the middle of the day to enjoy a yoga class," says one employee. People are encouraged to work the hours that suit them best, and there's also unlimited vacation time.

The online marketplace for handmade goods hosts an annual Hack Week where employees take time away from regular work to work on any special project they choose. Weird things are known to happen including spontaneous dance parties, pranks, and surprise guests.

Employees at this insurance brokerage earn "chips" by completing activities such as submitting ideas to their suggestion box, referring a new client or employee, or participating in wellness activities. Each chip counts as a chance to spin the Assurance "Wang Chung Wheel" at quarterly Assurance Casinos for a chance to win up to $300 cash.

Ever wonder what powers that phone you've got in your hand? Try semiconductor chips from a company like Cirrus Logic. Employees of the company take advantage of the fun locale around its corporate headquarters in Austin, Texas, a place known for its lively music scene, through company-sponsored happy hours. Cirrus also hosts rock concerts at the office and offers free festival tickets, too. Says one employee, "The management team strives very hard to ensure you feel like a contributor to the success of the company."

You'll find few complainers at this ad-tech firm, whose software aims to boost digital advertising campaigns: 95% of the company's staff say they're proud to tell others they work there, and just as many report feeling like part of a "family" or "team." More than half — 53% — of Centro workers are women, who also hold 50% of the company's management positions. All employees are also encouraged to take a 3-week sabbatical every four years.

This marketing and sales software company has growth on the menu. Its "always be growing" mantra encourages employees to teach classes to one another, and its "mystery dinner" events forge surprise connections among staff. A quarter of the company's executives are women, and a full 100% of employees say its a great workplace, thanks in part, no doubt, to unlimited vacation days.

The vocational rehabilitation non-profit outfits employees with company phones that have unlimited usage plans—even their family members are permitted to join the corporate program to reduce their monthly phone costs. Staff are invited to use their phones to share photos and videos of success stories with colleagues every quarter.

Classic cars and boats are Hagerty's business, but workers don't need to be into them to thrive at this Michigan insurer of vintage cars. Employees are given perks like time off for community service, a paid day off for their birthdays and wellness reimbursements. Hagerty workers also rave about the company's friendliness and its dedication to employees' professional development. And for those gearheads in the office, anyone can participate in the restoration of a classic vehicle off-site and top sellers even get to drive a vintage ride. "Hagerty is very unique in that we make the insurance business fun for both employees on the business side and clients on the consumer side," said one worker. "The level of education and employee growth encouraged by the company is very unique."

This construction company builds data centers, corporate and commercial office buildings, airport terminals, universities, hotels, convention centers and conference spaces. The company closes at 3:30 p.m. on Friday so associates can take advantage of reduced traffic and have some additional time away from the office for personal business or more time with family. Employee bonuses come from one pool and are based on the company's entire performance rather than project or departmental success—creating an equal opportunity for everyone.

The St. Cloud, Minnesota-based information technology service offers its employees a whole range of flexible work options, including telecommuting, flexible scheduling, compressed workweeks and unpaid sabbaticals. While about 24% of its employees are women, the management team boasts 34% female employees. Marco's strong involvement in local philanthropy, including donating 5% of profits to local causes, also boosts employee morale.

Investment toolmaker eVestment specializes in investing in its staff. Employees are allowed to take as much time off as they need, assuming they get their work done. Mid-year and year-end reviews provide opportunities for workers and managers to evaluate goals, set new priorities, and dole out bonuses. When someone succeeds in a big way, a company email and news ticker touts congratulations. As many as 98% of the staff report that they have great bosses. Says one teammate: "It's a young group of competitive people which makes the atmosphere motivating." 

eVestment

Point B is a 100% employee-owned management consulting and venture investment company, resulting in an office where everyone has a stake in the game. Point B goes above and beyond to take care of its workers, offering 100% company-paid health coverage and the flexibility to work from whatever city in which an employee lives. Each employee also owns their own schedule based on his or her client needs.

The Chicago-based consulting firm has employees across the country, allowing some to work even where there isn't a company office. Despite the way employees are scattered between offices, they say the work environment is collaborative and supportive. Monthly breakfasts with the company's leadership and regular social events and opportunities all contribute to strong feelings of belonging at West Monroe Partners. "West Monroe Partners is one of the few places that I've witnessed that combines the culture and camaraderie of a small company with the standards and professional aspects of a large company," says one employee. Plus, employees have a real stake in their company: West Monroe Partners is owned by its employees in an Employee Stock Ownership Program—so when West Monroe has a good year, so do they.

The nutritional food and drink maker is a dog-friendly and child-friendly workplace. Subsidized onsite day care is available for kids up to 6 years old and childcare scholarships are available for employees who meet certain requirements. All employees are invited to the annual skip trip—the company picks up hotel, lift tickets, and dinner.

The financial consultant gives new mothers up to 18 weeks of paid maternity leave and new fathers four weeks of paid leave. It also provides up to $10,000 in adoption assistance and up to 16 weeks of paid leave for the new child's primary caregiver.

Staff at this NYC-based software company love its nap pods, beer meetings, and video games, but say the best things about working there is the creative environment, the challenging work, and the support they get from management.

This operator of an electric grid for portions of the Midwest pays the entry fees for employees and their family members to participate in local fun runs, charity walks, and bike rides.

Every employee at this accounting firm has the chance to hear feedback at the end of a project or on a quarterly basis—and is asked for "upward" feedback for their direct supervisor. Office "neighborhoods" (floors or sections of departments) get together regularly for lunch or happy hour.

The provider of commercial real estate financing recognizes the dedication of long-time employees with annual service awards, which have ranged from $2,000 bonuses to trips valued at $25,000. 

Walker & Dunlop

Xactly helps companies improve their compensation tools for employees, and it clearly has a knack for incentivizing its own workers. 99 percent of employees say they enjoy their colleagues and workplace, and 92 percent say that promotions consistently go to those who truly deserve them. Employees enjoy free breakfast foods and snacks daily in the office, and many laud the company's involvement in philanthropy through its organization XactlyOne. Says one employee: "We have a great community and a social organization called XactlyOne that organizes tons of events, often benefiting local charities in the community."

Ninety-nine percent of employees say the staffing agency has a great atmosphere. Roth Staffing, where 70% of workers are women, offers a 9/80 flex schedule in which coworkers can work 9 longer days and get every other Friday off. That equals 26 three-day weekends throughout the year. About 79% of employees take advantage of it. The company also recognizes top performers with an annual all-expenses paid trip to Maui, one guest included.
