Fortune Best European Cities for Digital Nomads Methodology 2024

The Fortune Best European Cities for Digital Nomads list highlights the best cities for digital nomads based on a set of criteria that are particularly relevant to remote working, including visa requirements, cost of living, crime rates, healthcare provision, broadband access, climate, and the natural environment.

Scope:

  • European cities

Requirements:

  • Cities must be located in a country offering a digital nomad visa or a freelance/self-employed visa
  • Cities must be among the main population centres in their country

Methodology:

The ranking is based on a broad data set that includes:

  • Average monthly rent for a two-bedroom flat
  • Comparative price levels for household consumption expenditure
  • Crime statistics (robbery)
  • National healthcare expenditure per capita
  • Average daily sunshine hours
  • Average number of days requiring heating or cooling for comfortable temperatures
  • Broadband access
  • Beach and/or mountain vicinity

Cities were ranked on each variable; their scores where then combined into an aggregated ranking. All variables were weighted equally.

Data sources:

Data sources:   The underlying analysis for this list relies on country and city data as reported by Eurostat. Gaps have been filled in by additional research using national data sources (including for rent, crime, and health expenditure). Validation against known trends in city living standards is performed to ensure the accuracy of the rankings.
