Change the World 2023
India produces over 150,000 metric tons of municipal solid waste daily, but only 30% of it is recycled. In response to a growing waste crisis, Recykal launched a digital platform in 2019 called Recykal Marketplace to bring structure and formality to the country’s unstandardized, fragmented waste industry.
More than 325 recyclers and coprocessors and 3,000 waste aggregators now operate through the marketplace—which helps each player find the materials they want. This year, the marketplace processed 700,000 metric tons of waste, the equivalent of diverting 629 square kilometers of trash away from landfills or eliminating over 1.2 million metric tons of carbon emissions. Recykal has also integrated with informal waste pickers and scrap dealers, helping them elevate their socioeconomic status by paying fair wages. The initiative is not yet profitable, but revenue has increased more than tenfold in three years, from $8 million in 2021 to $95 million in 2023.
