In terms of trapping heat in the atmosphere, methane is much more potent than carbon dioxide—and far harder to detect. GHGSat’s constellation of satellites uses high-res cameras to survey millions of industrial sites for methane leaks; it says it spotted more than 20,000 leaks in 2024. GHGSat then notifies the sites’ owners and local governments to facilitate speedy fixes. Since inception, GHGSat has been able to support the mitigation of more than 20 metric tons of carbon dioxide—equal to removing 4.6 million cars from U.S. roads for a year.
