The Houston-based company is one of the world's largest independent oil and gas exploration and production companies, operating in 14 countries. ConocoPhillips reported profits of $8.1 billion in 2021, and revenue jumped 151% as energy demand soared; the company leaped 79 spots on the Fortune 500. The company began new exploration projects in Canada, Malaysia, and Alaska over the course of the year. Its Alaska operations posed problems in early 2022, however, as a monthlong natural gas leak at its Alpine Oil Field forced a temporary shutdown of drilling and prompted lawmakers and regulators to criticize ConocoPhillips for its slow response.
