A global health crisis continued to drive revenue growth at Centene, a health insurer with considerable exposure to the Medicaid and Affordable Care Act marketplaces. Revenue increased 13.4% in 2021, to $126 billion, and as of early 2022, Centene’s managed care membership had increased by 1.9 million over the previous year. In January 2022, Centene acquired Magellan Health for $2.2 billion, expanding its behavioral-health offerings. The company is also coping with a loss in the corner office: In April 2022, CEO Michael F. Neidorff, who headed Centene for more than 25 years, passed away after a long illness. Sarah London, formerly vice chairwoman, is now chief executive.
