Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have come a long way since the days of cypherpunks and crypto nerds.

Crypto has come a long way in the past 15 years. In the beginning, it was cypherpunk and now it's become big business. There are not only crypto native firms like coin base cracking and Binance, there are also traditional finance companies like JP Morgan and Fidelity that are investing big time. When Bitcoin was founded, it was founded with this core idea of decentralization. No one person controls the monetary supply of Bitcoin. Unlike for example, the US government that controls the supply of the US dollar decentralization though is very hard to do. In practice, it's hard to find someone to buy Bitcoin from you. And it's hard to find someone who can sell you Bitcoin. This is why a core group of centralized companies have grown up to make it easier for people to actually do these types of exchanges and investments. In addition to CFI, there's something called tray or traditional finance. And essentially this encompasses the household and brand names that we're all familiar with when we think of big banks and big finance. This includes JP Morgan and Fidelity. It also includes some of the established fintech firms like Robin Hood, the popular stock Trading app, paypal and Block, formerly known as Square, founded by Jack Dorsey, a lot of their investment and a lot of their engagement in the space of crypto is often more reliant on the technology of Blockchain which underlies Bitcoin and all of the cryptocurrencies that are basically on the market. For example, Jamie Dimon, CEO of JP Morgan has often said that he doesn't like Bitcoin, but JP Morgan has a division called Onyx, which is specifically devoted to using the technology of Blockchain to speed up various different kinds of financial transactions. Fintech firms like paypal block do allow you to buy Cryptocurrency. Paypal, for example, lets you buy Bitcoin, Ether, Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash. Robin Hood allows you to buy more than 10 different cryptocurrencies. For many years, the C five companies have dominated the crypto landscape. But recently with the spate of litigation from the SEC and the federal government, they have left space for trad five firms to occupy a lot of people in the crypto industry are saying that the future of Blockchain and Cryptocurrency does not lie with Coinbase and Binance and all of the large CFI firms. But with the likes of JP Morgan, Fidelity and paypal.

So you probably heard of Bitcoin billionaires, but you've probably heard of people losing their entire life savings investing in this highly speculative Cryptocurrency. Here's how you buy and sell Bitcoin safely. When Bitcoin was first getting it started, essentially, it was just like one guy and then some of his programmer friends, that's one guy with Satoshi Nakamoto and he was basically mining Bitcoin with just like a couple of other people. And that was pretty much the only way you could get Bitcoin was to mine it as it became more and more popular. What started happening was people were like, I don't want to mine Bitcoin. I don't want to use my computer servers to secure the network. But then some people including Brian Armstrong who founded coin base and some other big crypto exchanges started coming up these places where people were like not Cryptocurrency, experts could go buy a few Bitcoin. And since then, it's really kind of taken off coin based Crackin, Binance, all these big name crypto exchanges. Imagine them kind of like your New York stock exchange. The exchange buys the Bitcoin and then it is sold to people who are buying Bitcoin on the exchange, you can do all of this crypto buying and selling just with the phone in your pocket. When you want to buy crypto from coin base, you go on and create an account. You have to provide some sort of federally or state provided ids essentially to prove that you are, who you say you are. All of these central exchanges that at least operate in some legal capacity in the US have to adhere to federal laws concerning KYC or know your customer. Once you've set that all up, usually you get approved pretty quickly and then you're free to buy crypto so you can transfer money from your bank. Click a few buttons and suddenly you have Bitcoin in your coin base account at its most basic. There are two ways to store your crypto. It's either through a custodial account or a self custom wallet for the former. That would be an exchange that basically holds your Bitcoin for you. You don't have to remember all of the complicated passwords and phrases needed to get to the Bitcoin. But there is also a risk like we saw with FT once they go under, they take your crypto with them. That's why some people advocate for self custody. This is basically like holding your cash with you and not putting it anywhere else. You have your Bitcoin downloaded to a hardware wallet that's like a flash drive that essentially stores your Bitcoin and stores the password for your Bitcoin. But that has its own risks too. If you lose the hard drive, you're suddenly down potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of Bitcoin. In fact, there's kind of a celebrated story about this man who lost a flash drive worth hundreds of millions of Bitcoin. And he's looking for this flash drive in a garbage dump in the UK. Nowadays, the safety that you have to worry about, it's more about dealing with all of these different scams and claims of giving you free Cryptocurrency that appear across social media on Twitter, whatsapp, what have you? But there's no such thing as a free lunch. So if someone says here has some free Bitcoin, it is most likely b a lot of these are phishing attempts to essentially get you to go on a fake website, give them the credentials to where you store your Bitcoin or Cryptocurrency. And then they will drain that from where you have your crypto. And then suddenly you're left with nothing while buying and selling Bitcoin has become much more safe. There is still a lot of risk. So it's best to do your research and make sure you're using a trusted party to access the Bitcoin or Cryptocurrency that you're buying

While the lawsuits could be an existential threat to these crypto giants stateside, Fortune reporters point out that the price of Bitcoin is yet to take a hit.

Welcome to, let's discuss, we fortune reporters talk about the most important news stories of the week in two minutes. I'm Jeff Roberts here with my colleague Leo Schwartz. And this week we are going to discuss the S ECs ruthless campaign against crypto Leo. What is the latest? Yeah, so this week, we saw two very long awaited lawsuits by the S E C led by Gary Gusler against two crypto giants, one against finance, the other against coin base. The B one was certainly more serious in that the S E C alleged that they were mishandling customer funds along with other charges that also went to base, which basically stated that their entire business model is not legal in the US under the S E C interpretation, including that many of the cryptocurrencies that they list are unregistered securities and therefore should not be available, uh which obviously would pose a pretty existential threat to the industry here. So Jeff I'm curious what you think that means for us crypto. Yeah, this is serious. I mean, I spoke to a long time crypto lawyer this week and wrote a story to the fact that he believes that there's about a one third chance Coinbase won't even be in the US in five years. And this, of course is, you know, the flagship crypto company. So I think the threat is very real. However, there's something else going on, namely the price of crypto Bitcoin hasn't budged. You know, I mean, this is sort of the an apocalyptic regulatory action it feels like, but the market is totally shrugging it off, not the case, the coin base shares are down. But I do think this sort of, you know, is a testament to the fact that crypto is now much more global and can survive a regulatory onslaught from the US. What's your take? Yeah, I hear that all the time from sources outside the US where basically a lot of the events that are seismic in the US like the collapse of F T X don't register as much for companies or even uh investors or consumers overseas. So I think you see that reflected in finance or in the price of Bitcoin, obviously that can change if some of the allegations against finance proved to be true, including the mishandling of customer assets and maybe even their capacity to withdraw. And don't forget there's other issues to draw up. A lot of people are telling me criminal charges are coming from the justice department from a sanctions busting. It's gonna be pretty serious, but it all comes down to whether finance is solvent and so far as far as they are, but stay tuned, this is far from over. This has been let's discuss.
