Aldi quietly scrubbed its careers website of all DE&I initiatives

Some companies have publicly said they’re backing away from DE&I, but Aldi US appears to be taking its cues from its “Aisle of Shame,” seemingly quietly erasing evidence of its DE&I programs.

What’s happening? The bargain grocer with more than 50,000 employees quietly scrubbed its careers website of all DE&I initiatives earlier this month. On Jan. 18, the website featured a section titled “Aldinclusive” that claimed “diversity strengthens us.” It also outlined the company’s DE&I efforts and commitment, including support of the United Negro College Fund (for over 30 years), an inclusive resource library for employees to learn about DE&I, five inclusion groups, and internships for diverse students.

The section also linked to a larger corporate page that shared the steps Aldi takes to promote inclusion for all, and its $5.5 million DE&I Philanthropic Fund.

Both of these pages no longer exist and automatically redirect to other Aldi US corporate homepages. DE&I initiatives are still prominently featured on the Aldi UK, Ireland, and Australia careers websites.

According to one employee on Reddit, information on Aldi’s DE&I efforts is now only visible on the company’s internal employee website/portal. While the company appears to still have a DE&I team, it is unclear what parts of its programming are still intact.

Aldi did not respond to HR Brew’s repeated requests for comment.

Zoom out. Aldi US appears to be somewhat of an outlier among major US grocery chains. Walmart rolled back some of its DE&I policies late last year after pressure from activist Robby Starbuck, but the company said it remains committed to a diverse workplace, HR Brew reported.

Costco, the country’s second largest grocer, recently reaffirmed its commitment to DE&I, despite pressure from several Republican politicians. Kroger, meanwhile, lists DE&I among its employee values on its careers website, though it does not have a separate webpage for its initiatives or go into specifics.
