Kroger
The country’s largest supermarket chain by revenue, Kroger is second only to Walmart as the largest general retailer in the U.S. With nearly 2,800 stores in 35 states under two dozen banners and annual sales of more than $121.1 billion, Kroger today ranks as the world’s fifth-largest retailer. The company also operates 35 food manufacturing facilities that make thousands of products, accounting for 26% of Kroger’s total store dollar sales. Kroger stores take the shape of several different formats, including supermarkets, multi-department stores, Marketplace stores, price-impact stores, and fine jewelry stores. In 2021, Kroger was on the receiving end of criticism after it was revealed that CEO Rodney McMullen was awarded $21.1 million in compensation for 2019, despite the company having to lay off thousands of employees as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. The typical Kroger employee makes less than $27,000 in pay and benefits per year.
