In 2023, Sandy Ran Xu became the first woman to lead JD.com, the highest-ranked private Chinese company on the Global 500. The biggest push under her tenure? A bold expansion to food delivery, muscling into a sector dominated by Meituan and Alibaba. Competition grew so fierce that Beijing even had to step in to tell JD.com and others to tone things down. Still, JD.com generated 1.3 trillion Chinese yuan ($187 billion) in revenue last year, comfortably putting the e-commerce retailer in the very top tier of Chinese companies. On the global stage, Xu unveiled a Super Supply Chain strategy at the APEC CEO Summit in October 2025, anchored by an Asia-Pacific Import Doubling Plan, which commits to doubling imports from APEC countries over three years—potentially helping reduce a trade gap that’s caused tensions between China and its neighbors.
