Vicki Hollub joined Occidental in 1981 as an operations manager and worked her way up to the role of president and CEO in 2016. She is the first woman to run a major American oil company. Revenue for 2023 was down 22% year on year to $28.9 billion, and, until recently, Occidental had long-term principal debt of around $18 billion. It is paying it down via cash flow from operations (in the second quarter of 2024, the company delivered its highest quarterly production in four years) and divestitures. In August, Occidental closed a $12 billion acquisition of CrownRock, a Texas-based oil and gas firm. Occidental has committed to a carbon-neutral production model and is a prominent advocate of direct air capture (DAC), the process of capturing CO2 from the atmosphere and injecting it underground. The company is building the world’s biggest DAC facility in Texas.
