Of all pandemic-hit industries, the travel sector arguably has suffered the most. Trip.com Group, a travel service provider, is certainly one proof point. Its revenue plunged 42% in the first quarter of 2020 and 64% in the second, compared with the same periods in 2019. China, Trip’s home market, has largely contained the COVID-19 outbreak, and its travel comeback has helped take the edge off those ugly numbers. Sun said in September that reservations for domestic flights and hotels in China had made a “full recovery,” as mainland travelers embarked on short-haul trips within the country. Early on in the pandemic, Trip enlisted airlines and hotels to offer penalty-free trip cancellations to customers, and Sun herself took no salary for a period starting in March.
