In early 2020, Starbucks China—with more than 4,400 stores and 58,000 employees in the country—looked like it would be one of the biggest economic casualties of the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19. At the time, Wong, working with very little information on the then-mysterious, fast-spreading disease, closed down 80% of her stores. The company continued to pay impacted employees, and offered them counseling, online courses, and financial assistance when needed. As the virus spread around the globe, Wong’s management of the situation became a model—not just for Starbucks but for the broader corporate community. Starbucks China’s business has rebounded since the year’s early months, and Wong continues to pursue partnerships—like those with Sequoia Capital, and Alibaba and Tencent—that put the company on the leading edge of Chinese retail.
