In 2012, three crypto enthusiasts—David Schwartz, Jed McCaleb, and Arthur Britto—launched the cryptocurrency XRP and its associated blockchain. They aimed to create a version of Bitcoin optimized for payments and started a company with Chris Larsen to develop the protocol, which eventually became known as Ripple. As of June 2026, XRP is worth more than $82 billion, and Ripple uses the token for cross-border payments.
