Gerwig took a 150-year-old classic and made it her own. The director’s Little Women reimagined Louisa May Alcott’s beloved source material, earning the film six Oscar nominations and one win (although Gerwig was notably, and regrettably, snubbed for best director). No stranger to the period piece—if you consider Lady Bird’s 2002 a period setting—Gerwig may next be responsible for another cultural phenomenon: the return of tap dancing. The performer turned writer-director has hinted that she is working on a musical that will incorporate the underappreciated art.
