When God-is Rivera, Twitter’s global director of culture and community, slides into your DMs, expect to be invited to change the world. Rachel La Loca, writer, producer, and comedic entertainer, discovered that when she was tapped to join, via DM, one of Rivera’s regular, small convenings called #TwitterVoices. From Spanish Harlem to Cannes, they’ve become her signature way to bring creatives from underrepresented communities together with Twitter executives to cross-pollinate ideas. Everything is on the table, from art, business, family, and politics, to the role that social media plays in abuse, discrimination, disinformation, and mental health. “There was a lot of great people in the room,” La Loca says on her Latinos Out Loud podcast. “And also a lot of very opinionated people.” These convenings are part of Rivera’s mandate to both improve the experience that people from marginalized communities have on Twitter while helping Twitter’s executives better understand how to protect them. Rivera, who previously led internal diversity and inclusion at VMLY&R, a digital and creative agency, has been making use of what she gleans from her get-togethers. One of her recent campaigns was a series of real tweets under #BlackLivesMatter that was reproduced on billboards in cities experiencing George Floyd–related protests.
