Elisha Otis—inventor of the safety elevator—founded the company in 1853 in Yonkers, N.Y., changing urban landscapes forever by enabling the skyscraper. In 1925, the company introduced the first-ever completely automatic elevator. Today, as it operates in nearly every country in the world, Otis manufactures and maintains elevators, escalators, and moving walkways. It became a public company in 2020, the result of a spinoff from United Technologies Corporation.
