Since 2010, when it was founded, GoFundMe has served as a catchall for Americans in crisis, an impromptu social net that unfurls in the absence of a government-funded one. GoFundMe campaigns have benefited people whose homes have burned down, or whose medical bills are insurmountable, or who have tragically lost a loved one in a mass shooting, or been befallen by countless other woes. It’s a far from perfect system for those in need—money tends to flow to the most compelling causes, or to the best storytellers, rather than the most desperate ones. But there’s no denying that the for-profit platform, and the community that rallies around it, helps people get through bad times. During its 12 years of existence, good Samaritans have given $17 billion to various causes through GoFundMe, which takes a small cut of each donation—2.9%, plus 30 cents per transaction—and operates in 19 countries. When war broke out in Ukraine earlier this year, the company’s global reach made a difference; its site activated a “Ukraine Crisis Hub” that connected thousands looking to donate to organizations in the best position to distribute funds. The company says it has drawn more than 725,000 donors from across 140 countries—an unprecedented response to an unprecedented war.
