With origins dating back to 1871 as the Life Insurance Company of Virginia, Genworth's product offerings include long-term care insurance, mortgage insurance, and annuities. The company spent several years as part of General Electric's GE Capital division before being spun out again as an independent company in 2004. Genworth's big bet on long-term care insurance in the GE years has been a drag on its financial performance in the ensuing years, as payouts for such coverage have proved more expensive than insurers anticipated.
