The company spent several years as part of General Electric's GE Capital division before being spun out again as an independent company in 2004. Genworth's big bet on long-term care insurance in the GE years has been a drag on its financial performance in the ensuing years, as payouts for such coverage have proved more expensive than insurers anticipated.
