Be it working on vaccines or therapeutics, striving to improve testing, or just helping us better understand the COVID-19 virus, leaders in those fields are innovating and collaborating in new exciting ways as they race to meet it.

[MUSIC PLAYING] CLIFTON LEAF: What Apple was able to do with its electronic health records interface, very, very quickly, how does that change the game for EHRs and the rest of medicine? DR. LLOYD MINOR: We have a long way to go with EHRs. I mean, we still transmit records by fax machines in health care today. Can you believe that? I mean-- CLIFTON LEAF: Where are the fax machines? DR. LLOYD MINOR: Under the computer do you see a fax machine. I think what Apple has done in terms of empowering people to have their medical records on their device and in partnership with health care delivery systems like Stanford Medicine, that's very empowering for all of us. And it's a start, but we still have a long way to go to really make electronic health records interoperable, to make them serve the needs of our patients and of health care providers. The commonly used electronic health record systems in the country today are legacy systems based upon 1970s architecture, and they just don't lend themselves to the type of modern software innovation that Apple and other major tech firms are [INAUDIBLE]. And I do think we're starting to see change. And I think with the Office of the National Coordinator and a lot of other governmental agencies interested in this interoperability topic, yesterday, Dr. Seema Verma on Fortune Brainstorm Health, talked a lot about that in her remarks. And I'm optimistic that we're going to continue to drive that change and it can't come quickly enough. CLIFTON LEAF: So Sumbul, I look to bring you into this conversation about UX, right? And I mean this is, you know, Apple is famous for its user interface. It's famous for its consumer-centrism, and its looking at the health care world through these lenses. And tell me how that translates into, as you're thinking about projects to develop. DR. SUMBUL DESAI: You know, with what we did, for example, with the ECG app, it's something we're really proud of as a team is that that is an incredibly beautiful experience, but also an accurate and validated one. And so, when we think about the work, we really think about bringing those worlds together. And in every aspect of the development we do around health features, we think about usability at every step of the process, even with our studies, but also we think about the science along the way. So I think it's what's nice is we-- it's really special and amazing. And that's why it's so fun is you get to bring those two worlds together and hopefully develop really meaningful and impactful features for our customers. [MUSIC PLAYING]

Apple and Stanford University School of Medicine have worked closely toward discovery of how technology innovation can usher in a new era of proactive healthcare and Electronic Health Records.

[ MUSIC ] Some big news in the cryptocurrency world, which is, all of these big publishing platforms are banning cryptocurrency ads. It actually started with Facebook earlier this year, Alphabet followed suit. Now this week, we have Twitter. Jumping onboard and saying no to inital coin offering ads. Gen Y, why should they get rid of these advertisements? Well, I think it's a long time coming and we've actually seen not just unquestionable ads Where they're marketing ICOs that may be illegal in other products and trying to take advantage of consumers. But often they're actually phishing scam which we've seen where they're actually doing spoofs, making it look like these are ads for products that consumers are actually searching for in the cryptocurrency space that then turn out to be malicious sites that suck up their data and take their moneys. So this is not just a problem with spam, it's actually a problem with scams and [ UNKNOWN ] taken advantage of. That's a great point. Lots of the [ UNKNOWN ] leaders in the cryptocurrency world lie [ UNKNOWN ] the creator of the theorem. Somebody will tweet under him and say I'm giving away free [ UNKNOWN ] send your address this way But it's a scammer. It's somebody who's posing as him trying to dupe people into sending their own BitCoin that way or ether. Exactly. You don't wanna take candy from a stranger and you also don't wanna take encrypto. Exactly, exactly. So, I mean, this advertising thing, there have been ads following me around the web. I know this like Crypto genius reveals the next BitCoin. Have you seen these? Have you gotten these? I haven't, but you guys are further in, I suspect, than I am. You must have a better ad blocker than we do. Yeah, seriously. Look, I step back on these a little bit, though. I cringe because it's like, okay. Do we really wanna get lid of the entire category, alcohol, tobacco, firearms, and cryptocurrency. These are the things that corrupt our society. So we do certainly burn other types of financial instruments .>> So speaking of burning there is now this issue where on the very blockchain itself could be illegal materials such as child photography such that if you own a copy of the block like most people have if you are mining it if you're using it. You keep a copy of this on your hard drive, that could be illegal. Yeah, so some researchers recently came out with a paper in a science journal. And they said that actually, yeah, it could be illegal to own a copy of the block chain. The block chain's very premise is to be distributed, owned by lots of different people out in the public. But you've got nefarious actors who are embedding terrible things like child abuse imagery inside of it. In my opinion I think that the way that stuff is encoded in data, it's not like it's actually the image itself. So I think that there is You know, you could parse that point. That's true, you'd have to actually make the decision to know it was child pornography and click on it in order to download the image. Otherwise, it's just encrypted material. You're just on this blockchain, but it's not actually visible to you and you'd have to actually Intentionally see it if you wanted it to, which is a different thing because I assume most people who are using the blockchain technology are not actually looking to see that type of material. And this might be an opportunity for the law to start catching up, because I mean I'm no legal expert here, but I recall that it's really around posession. So if it's merely posession, that's kind of a challenge in the circumstances that we're talking about here. And obvioudly you wouldn't blame Verizon or AT & T or your internet service provider, just because they have that kind of material passing through their tubes, their wires. Do we really want that too? I mean, I agree intent is a huge thing here, but the technology is just unprecedented. [ MUSIC ]
