Dell's second year after returning as a publicly traded company finished with overall sales (for the fiscal year ending Jan. 31) up a modest 2%, to $92.2 billion. The technology conglomerate still faces big challenges selling data center hardware like servers and storage devices, as more businesses buy on-demand cloud computing resources from other tech giants. But its VMware enterprise software unit is growing fast, with annual sales up 12% year-over-year, to $10.9 billion. No wonder Dell CEO Michael Dell referred to VMware as the “crown jewel” of the EMC Federation, the enterprise hardware giant Dell bought in 2016.
