Modern Boards 2022 Anthem

Anthem, a health insurance provider, has been winning acclaim of late from investors.

Analysts maintain a positive outlook on its stock due in part to the company’s expansion of services beyond health benefits, as the company builds its businesses in prescription benefit management and value-based care.

Anthem’s board stood out for gender equality, nationality dispersion, and board independence. The company named Liz Tallett the chairman of the board in 2018. Tallett was previously CEO at Transcell Technology, a precision-measurement company, and president of Centocor Pharmaceuticals. Recognizing the advanced technology needs of the company, Anthem’s board also includes Robert L. Dixon Jr., the former chief information officer of Pepsi.

Its other directors include eight current or former CEOs. Among them are Antonio Neri, CEO of Hewlett Packard Enterprise; Ryan M. Schneider, CEO of Realogy Holdings; and Bahija Jallal, CEO of Immunocore Limited. Former CEOs of Cardinal Health, Premier, and NextEra Energy are also on the board.

Most Powerful Women 2021: Gail Boudreaux

My first full time professional job was as a professional basketball player in Versailles France. What I learned from that was, you can kind of do anything if you're willing to be open minded and take a challenge and I feel really strongly about, um, you have to be yourself no matter what your challenges are, the opportunities that you take. Yeah. Scale was previously on our list As a very senior executive at United Healthcare Group, but since 2017 she's been the head of Anthem, which is one of the largest health insurance providers. Anthem had a really strong year, financially market cap just really skyrocketed and revenue increased $17 billion dollars year over year on a growing number of plan holders.

My first full time professional job was as a professional basketball player in Versailles, France. And without speaking the language, got on a plane, moved there for a year and joined a team that spoke only French. What I learned from that was you can kind of do anything if you're willing to be open minded and take a challenge. [ MUSIC ] I'm restless about the future. I'm always thinking about the things that we can be doing, where we can improve, how do we transform ourselves? And I think that restlessness is a really important part of senior leadership in any company. We're in an industry that's going through dramatic transformation, but ultimately you need to transform and you need to move even faster. Information It's so much more ubiquitous. Digital is transforming all of our industries. And skill sets are changing very quickly for people who work in our company but also consumers who have much greater demands on the type of information that they want. Part of my early career, probably for the first 10 years, I was pretty much working on problems. So I was working in businesses that were underperforming, or projects that had not gone well, and so. The lesson for me in all of that was there's always another move, there's always something you can do, and there's always something you can learn and lean into challenges. [ MUSIC ] I love the opportunity to set strategy, lead a company, build teams, define a culture and I feel really strongly about you have to be yourself no matter what your challenges are the opportunities that you take. I also think it's really important never to lose sight of what got you to the position And so part of my leadership is I spent a lot of time with our customers in the field talking to our frontline associates, and over the years that has been incredibly valuable to me, you get great feedback. And it keeps you connected and close to the business. So this combination i think of really setting the right mission vision and values, authentic leadership And then staying close to the business so that you can really be authentic honestly in your leadership and the goals you set and what you ask people to do and that's how I think about what has defined my career.
