we meet this year in a moment of intermingled with great pain and extraordinary possibility. We've lost so much to this deputy, this devastating pandemic that continues to claim lives around the world and impact so much on our existence. We're mourning more than 4.5 million people. People of every nation from every background. Each death is an individual heartbreak. But our shared grief as a poignant reminder that our collective future will hinge on our ability to recognize our common humanity and to act together. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the clear and urgent choice that we face here at the dawning of what must be a decisive decade for our world. A decade that will quite literally determine our futures as a global community. Were challenged by urging and looming crises. We're in lie enormous opportunities. If if we can summon the will and resolve to seize these opportunities? Well we work together to save lives defeat COVID-19 everywhere and take the necessary steps to prepare ourselves for the next pandemic for there will be another one. Or when we fail to harness with tools at our disposal as a more virulent dangerous variants. Take hold well, we make the threat of challenging climate. The challenging climate. We're all feeling already ravaging every part of our world with extreme weather or well we suffer the merciless march of ever worsening droughts and floods, more intense fires and hurricanes, longer heat waves and rising seas. Will we affirm and uphold the human dignity and human rights underwoods nations and common cause more than seven decades ago formed this institution. When we apply and strengthen the core tenets of Internet of the international system including the U. N. Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. As we seek to shape the emergence of new technologies and deter new threats or well, we allow these universal those universal principles to be trampled and twisted in the pursuit of naked political power, in my view how we answer these questions in this moment whether we choose to fight for our shared future or not will reverberate for generations yet to come simply put, we stand in my view at an inflection point in history. [ MUSIC ] The immediate risk to the general American public remains low. But as we have warned, that has the potential to change quickly. There is now community transmission in a number of countries including outside of Asia. That's deeply concerning and community spread and other countries will make successful containment at our borders harder and harder. We will maintain for as long as practical, a dual approach where we continue these measures of aggressive containment to this disease But also employ strategies to minimize the impact on our communities. However, current global circumstances suggest it's likely that this virus will cause a pandemic. In that case risk assessment would be different and new strategies tailored to local circumstances. Would need to be implemented to blunt the impact of the disease and further slow the spread of the virus. Now, it's not so much a question of if this will happen anymore, but rather more a question of exactly when this will happen. And how many people in this country will become infected and how many of those Will develop severe or more, more complicated disease. We're trying to engage in radical transparency with the American public as we go as we go through this, each of those messages is accurate, but addresses a particular aspect of what we're talking about. So for instance, abroad. This is spreading quite rapidly in the United States, thanks to the president and this team's aggressive containment efforts. This disease as Dr. shaken said, is contained. We don't want people surprised if they see more cases here in the United States. That's an important part of transparency. People shouldn't panic when they see New cases. They should know their government predicted we would have them and we have plans in place. [ MUSIC ]

Health officials assess how coronavirus may impact the U.S.

Mary, there are a lot of worries about the global economy and especially this slow down in China, GM is big in China. From what you're seeing there, what's the business output for China? Rita, we saw strength come back in September from the August, still not up to last years level. But we look through the year, we think it's gonna be low on low single digit growth. But if you look at the size of that market, over 24 million units right now. And we believe over the next ten to 15 years we're gonna see that grow by another ten million units. So a very important market. But I think what we're gonna see as we go forward is more volatility, especially in autos. but we know that we're a cyclical business. Well on that here in the US auto sales overall have been growing every single year. They have been up seven years in a row unprecedented is this as good as it gets. Seven years because generally when the market recovers, it recovers more quickly. So this has been a slower recovery, which I think is important because generally that means we haven't overshot anything. So we still see the next year or so to be strong. I can't tell you exactly what level, but we see strong performance and we see huge opportunity when you look at all the factors combined. What are the bumps in the road, and what worries you? I think as we look at the fundamentals of the business, do we have the right products in each of the markets? And are we leading edge from a technology perspective? And there's several examples of where we are. Our products are getting great external Recognition. There's places where our brands are already strong. There's places where we're building our brands. And we're really being guided by the customer. So I really look at there's challenges on every corner of the business. But how are we making sure we're focused on the customer and we're best positioning ourself for whatever happens we can react to quickly? And you know there's all this talk, of course, about what the Federal Reserve is gonna do and what's gonna happen with interest rates. What are your thoughts that if interest rates go up At some time over the next couple of months, no matter what the percentage is. What impact would that have on GM's sales and on car buyers? It all depends on when and how that happens. But right now we're seeing strength in the market in what customers are looking for with low gas prices, they're buying. Trucks and SUVs, and it's at a great time for us as were executing our three truck strategy. We have a lot of new cars coming out next year for Chevrolet and Cadillac and so I think we're in a strong position regardless of what unfolds with the right products and the marketplace for our customers.
