Tom Brady wore an ‘insanely rare’ $740,000 diamond- and yellow-sapphire-studded watch for his first time as a Super Bowl commentator

  • Tom Brady wore a $740,000 watch for his first time as a Super Bowl commentator. The Jacob & Co. timepiece includes 424 gems and a flying tourbillon, a sign of a luxury watch. The company produced only 18 of these watches, making the piece “insanely rare,” a fine jewelry store owner told Fortune.

The Super Bowl is a star-studded event, much like the Grammys and other awards shows. And many celebrities at Sunday night’s Super Bowl LIX dressed to impress, namely Tom Brady.

The NFL legend, who made his first appearance as a Super Bowl commentator for Fox Sports this year, wore a diamond- and yellow-sapphire-studded watch for the occasion. Before retiring from the NFL in February 2023, Brady signed a $375 million contract to be the lead sports commentator for Fox Sports, and made his debut during the 2024 season.

The watch Brady sported during the Super Bowl costs an eye-popping $740,000, a spokesperson for the watchmaker Jacob & Co., told Fortune. Brady is worth an estimated $300 million or more.

The Caviar Tourbillon watch is dripping in 424 baguette-cut gems, including diamonds and yellow sapphires in a 47-millimeter, polished 18-carat yellow gold case. In total, the watch boasts 48.92 carats’ worth of yellow sapphires and 1.32 carats of white diamonds. It also features a one-minute flying tourbillon, which increases the accuracy of the timepiece by fighting the effects of gravity. 

“Tom Brady is the epitome of excellence, both on and off the field,” Benjamin Arabov, CEO of Jacob & Co, said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to see him wearing one of our most prestigious timepieces on the biggest stage in sports.”

In addition to the expensive materials used to make the watch, Jacob & Co. produced just 18 of them, making the piece “insanely rare,” Irina Aran, founder, owner, and designer of Brooklyn, N.Y.-based Facets Fine Jewelry, told Fortune. 

“Each stone measures exactly the same. This means they are all cut perfectly to fit into this timepiece,” Aran said. “Each one has to match one another. To find two matching exact stones is so rare. The quality also must be exact and aligned, adding to its rarity.”

Representatives for Brady didn’t immediately respond to Fortune’s request for comment.

Brady is a watch connoisseur 

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the ex-Patriots quarterback wearing a flashy timepiece. Brady’s love for watches started when his parents gave him his first watch for his high school graduation, according to Sotheby’s, and became more elevated after he won his first Super Bowl in 2002. 

In October, Sotheby’s announced the seven-time Super Bowl champion’s watches, jerseys, and other collectibles would open for bidding in December.

Brady’s collection of watches alone sold for an impressive $4.6 million. Of the 41 items auctioned off, the one with the highest price tag was a yellow gold Rolex Daytona “John Player Special” watch, which had a presale estimate of $600,000 to $900,000, according to The Athletic. 

This was the watch Brady wore when New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft told him he’d be inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame, and sold for a whopping $1.4 million. He also auctioned off an Audemars Piguet, a Richard Mille, a Philippe Nautilus, and his pilot’s watch.

“These watches and collectibles really capture those unforgettable moments and all the hard work behind them,” Brady said in an October statement.

Aran said Brady wearing the Jacob & Co. watch to the Super Bowl is a “testament to his impressive watch collection.”
