Friends and family will arrive in a couple hours—and you just realized you didn’t buy enough potatoes. Or maybe you burned the pie. Perhaps the turkey is still frozen solid.

Don’t panic. Dinner can be salvaged in time, but if you were hoping to do some early holiday shopping at the same time you grabbed those ingredients, it could be a little trickier.

Several grocery chains will be open on Thanksgiving, the most food-centric of the all U.S. holidays. But major retailers will largely be closed, as the trend of luring people kicking off their Black Friday sales bonanzas before the table was cleared of Thanksgiving dinner dishes has slowed considerably.

There are, of course, exceptions on both fronts. Some grocers are giving their staff time off to spend with family—and some retailers will remain open, hoping to lure in early birds and people who spill gravy on the tablecloth.

Here’s a look at the stores that will—and won’t—be open on Thanksgiving 2024. Note, as always, that hours may vary, so it’s a good idea to call first. And keep in mind also that blue laws in Maine, Massachusetts and Rhode Island prohibit retailers from being open in those states.
