California has long been a hub of economic success, and with the world’s recent AI explosion, America’s technology capital is ready to soar to even greater heights.

For the first time since 2014, the Golden State beat out Texas and New York to become home to the most Fortune 500 companies, with an impressive 57 companies within its borders. Texas and New York, which both tied for second, have 52 companies each.

Texas has proven to be tough competition in recent years, with companies like Tesla and pharmaceutical giant McKesson moving their headquarters to the Lone Star state to leverage its business-friendly policies like loose regulatory oversight and low taxes. So is New York, as America’s most populous city, remains the epicenter for banking and consulting firms.

Although five California-based companies dropped off the Fortune 500 list this year, the state beat out other competitors because nine companies headquartered there made the cut. Some newcomers include food delivery company DoorDash and real estate investment firm Prologis, cleaning product manufacturer Clorox, and software company Workday.
