Summer won’t officially start until next month, but for most people (and judging by the forecasts along the eastern half of the country), Memorial Day weekend marks the start of festivities.

The holiday, which is meant to honor Americans who have died in military service, is a nice chance for many people to collectively catch their breath after sprinting through the first five months of the year. It’s also an opportunity for retailers to lure shoppers in with sales, before summer activities distract them.

Despite the fact that it’s a big shopping day, not every store is open, however. And there’s often confusion over what government and private services are available. Here’s a look at who’s open and who’s closed on Memorial Day:

Are banks open on Memorial Day 2024?

Memorial Day is a federal bank holiday, meaning all branches will be closed. Many operations can be done online or with your bank’s app, of course. And ATMs, as always, are available if you need to get cash or make a deposit into your account.

Is the post office open on Memorial Day 2024?

Nope. Memorial Day is a federal holiday, so the U.S. Postal Service is closed, and no mail delivery will take place. UPS and FedEx also observe the holiday, though UPS Express Critical and FedEx Custom Critical are still available. FedEx will suspend Express service the Sunday before Memorial Day as well as Ground, Ground Economy and Freight service for the two days before the holiday. Select FedEx Office stores will be open, but have modified hours.

Is the stock market open on Memorial Day 2024?

Even Wall Street is taking a day off. The New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq and bond markets are all closed.

Which department stores are closed on Memorial Day 2024?

The majority of retailers don’t shut down on Memorial Day, but some smaller businesses might opt to enjoy the holiday. And Costco locations nationwide will be closed.
