As coronavirus cases and deaths continue to decline in the U.S., and the country’s COVID vaccine rollout enters into its sixth month, the nation hit a pandemic milestone: More than half of the U.S. adult population is now fully vaccinated against the virus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

As of May 26, 129.8 million Americans—including 74.1% of seniors, 50.3% of adults, and 39.7% of the total population—are in that category, up from 125.5 million a week ago. The nation is poised to reach half of the total population with at least one vaccine dose by week’s end: 165.1 million people, or 49.7% of the population, currently have received at least one shot.

In total, 289.2 million vaccine doses have been administered across the country, about 80% of the 359.8 million vaccine doses that have been delivered across the country. The vast majority of people have received either the Pfizer or Moderna mRNA vaccines. About 10.5 million people have received Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose product.

The gap continues to widen across the states when it comes to the share of residents vaccinated. Vermont leads the country, having reached more than 70% of its total population with a COVID shot. Mississippi remains the state with the smallest share of vaccinated residents, with 33.7% of its population having received one shot.

New England continues to outpace the rest of the nation, though 21 states, including California, Illinois, and New York, as well as the District of Columbia, have reached at least half their residents with at least one vaccine dose.
