New York City Seeks $35 Million in Federal Funds to Protect Donald Trump

New York City is requesting $35 million from the federal government to cover security costs for President-elect Donald Trump.

Trump has spent much of his time since the election at his Trump Tower apartment in midtown Manhattan, forcing steep costs for the city as police work with the Secret Service to amp up security in the area. That comes out to be $1 million a day to protect Trump and his family, Mayor Bill de Blasio said back in November.

The city is now seeking federal funds to pay for the security costs through Jan. 20, when Trump will be inaugurated, as well as money to cover ongoing costs during his presidency, Bloomberg reported. Trump has indicated he will frequently return to New York, while his wife, Melania Trump, and their 10-year-old son Barron are not immediately moving to the White House.

“This is truly unusual, it’s the first time we’ve had NYPD providing such a crucial role providing security for a president-elect,” de Blasio told reporters during a news conference on Monday. “I remain hopeful because when you see other instances when New York City provided security we got good reimbursement.”

De Blasio said he would work with the Trump administration to make sure New York is reimbursed for security costs connected to Trump Tower.
