FORTUNE — You know you’re spending too much time tracking a charity auction — in this case for the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice & Human Rights — when a $5,000 drop in price feels like big news.
But there I was Monday morning asking the spokesperson for Charitybuzz, which is running the RFK Center’s 2013 fundraiser, why the top bid for a chance to have coffee with Apple (AAPL) CEO Tim Cook had fallen from $605,000 Friday night to $600,000 Monday morning.
The answer, it turns out, is that the $605,000 bid was made on a stolen credit card.
That must have been a rude surprise for the card holder.
