Couriers at international shipping giant DHL Express were very much on the front lines during COVID-19, and the company was quick to distribute gloves and masks, enable no-contact delivery, and implement temperature checks at facilities. Thanks to these and other measures, 91% of employees agree with the statement, “This is a physically safe place to work.” The pandemic also led DHL to conduct focus groups with managers and survey more than 14,000 employees about the future of work. The results showed that employees value flexibility, and DHL responded by launching a flexible work schedule in January 2022. The company’s many DEI initiatives include DHL4HER, which aims to have 30% of leadership roles occupied by women by 2025. “Diversity/equity/inclusion is valued and encouraged here,” says one employee. “As a corporation I think we operate with very high ethical standards, and that is something very important to me.”

DHL was one of countless companies that faced the unthinkable over the past year: losing members of its ranks to the virus. Upon these individuals’ passing, DHL supported surviving colleagues amid their devastation through its employee assistance program. And for all employees impacted by COVID-related absences, the company provided supplemental pay—up to 10 days. DHL, which employs 6,942 in the United States, did not cut jobs or pay and expanded paid sick leave throughout the pandemic, even as countries locked down, fleets were grounded, and air cargo capacity plummeted. To make employees feel supported, global CEO John Pearson dialed in to meetings that he previously wouldn’t have participated in, and the company quickly mobilized to purchase laptops, headphones, and other equipment for its newly remote workforce.
