Virginia Beach may have a reputation as a resort city, but it’s also a great retirement city with year-round mild temperatures. As the tourism board’s website proclaims: “We only have one season. Beach.”

Situated where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean, Virginia Beach has 35 miles of coastline with serene ocean views and a bustling boardwalk that comes to life at night with live music and entertainment. It’s a great spot for walking or biking, but so too are the 200 miles of bikeways and trails throughout the city—as well as the nature trails in more than 230 parks and natural areas, such as First Landing State Park and Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge

On the arts and culture front, there’s plenty to keep seniors busy. They can catch a show at the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts or take a class at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art. Virginia Beach established its own creative district a decade ago, which hosts monthly and weekly events.

With a senior center, an office of volunteer resources, and an LGBTQ+-friendly community, Virginia Beach makes it easy for seniors to connect with others and find a support system.

The city is near Naval Station Norfolk, as well as other military bases, a bonus for retired veterans who can benefit from VA hospitals and access to base amenities. It’s also close to several hospitals, including Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital and Chesapeake Regional Medical Center.

Although Virginia taxes most types of retirement income, it doesn’t tax Social Security, and retirees age 65 and older may qualify for a tax deduction of up to $12,000.
