Surrounded by the Green Mountains and Lake Champlain, it’s easy to get lost in the beauty of South Burlington. It has a small-town atmosphere with access to both urban amenities and nature, ideal for seniors who still want to experience all four seasons. They can go fishing during the mild summers, trail walking during Vermont’s glorious fall, and snowshoeing during the crisp winters.  

It’s easy for retirees to stay physically and mentally active in South Burlington. They can find beaches with scenic overlooks at the 100-acre Red Rocks Park, wildlife at the 140-acre Wheeler Nature Park, and jogging and cycling opportunities on the South Burlington Recreation Path. The nearby University of Vermont offers classes for seniors through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, as well as lectures and cultural events to attend. 

Seniors are also close to the University of Vermont Medical Center, an award-winning hospital that serves as the anchor academic hospital for the University of Vermont Health Network.  

As a sustainable community, South Burlington has established a conservation fund for open spaces and a climate action plan. It also hosts an Energy Festival every year. Between that and an annual arts festival, as well as farmers’ markets and seasonal celebrations, there’s plenty of community events in which seniors can participate.
