South Portland takes a best places seat once again after appearing on the list in 2022. This slice of New England paradise sits across the river from the better known Portland, but is more suburban and quiet than its neighbor with many recreational activities on tap.

Residents can take advantage of its waterfront location at small sand-and-pebble Willard Beach, where you can dip into the waters and explore tidal pools as ferries and lobster boats bob in the distance. One of South Portland’s most scenic spots is Bug Light Park, known for its circa-1855 lighthouse, Portland Breakwater Light. The city’s Parks Division encompasses over 350 acres of parks, trails, coastline, and recreational centers. Every summer, it hosts Art in the Park in Mill Creek Park, highlighting art and photography alongside food and music offerings.

Retirees might enjoy a senior drop-in program providing educational classes and activities at the local community center, while children and teens can visit the Wainwright Field Athletic Complex, which boasts ski trails and several fields for sports, such as soccer and lacrosse. For those who prefer to spend their time shopping, South Portland is home to Maine Mall, the state’s largest.

Hospitals are close by—there are three within 10 miles, per Healthgrades. And there are 34 above-average nursing homes within 50 miles, according to Caring.com.
