A 2023 winner, South Burlington makes the list yet again for its outdoor access, sustainability initiatives, and low crime rates. No wonder Sharecare’s Community Well-Being Index score for the city is 72 out of 100.

It’s conveniently located near the Burlington International Airport and the University of Vermont Medical Center, an award-winning hospital that also serves as the anchor academic hospital for the University of Vermont Health Network. UVM is a major employer in the area and has invested $9 million in employee housing. It just opened a new apartment building for staff, with a childcare center slated to open on the premises this fall.

Natural beauty abounds in South Burlington, with a nearby lake for swimming and mountains for skiing and hiking. The 100-acre Red Rocks Park features both beaches and scenic overlooks, while the 140-acre Wheeler Nature Park is filled with trails and proves an ideal spot for a family picnic. Overlook Park offers views of Lake Champlain and the Adirondacks.

The city has made a commitment to sustainability, establishing a conservation fund for open spaces as well as a climate action plan. It even hosts an Energy Festival to promote going green and clean.
