The Boise suburb of Meridian strikes a balance between small-town charm and urban amenities, its safe neighborhoods surrounded by high-desert foothills.
The Village is the hub of Meridian life, a plaza with cobblestone streets lined by boutiques, restaurants, and a cinema. Catch a concert at the amphitheater in the nearby 58-acre Julius M. Kleiner Memorial Park, which houses the city’s senior center, a splash pad, pickleball and basketball courts, and shelters for a family picnic.
Brick buildings and bungalows lend character to downtown Meridian, which hosts a farmers’ market every Wednesday and Sunday as well as city events, like the Annual Dairy Days Parade and seasonal concert series. Meridian even has its own Oktoberfest every fall, a season that brings its corn mazes to life with some haunted fun. The city offers a low-key antiquing scene, with specialty stores selling mid-century and other vintage finds.
It’s also home to Roaring Springs, the largest water park in Southwest Idaho, and the Meridian Speedway for a night of auto-racing entertainment. Those seeking more adventure can find some of Boise’s best outdoor activities nearby, like floating along the Boise River and hiking Table Rock Quarry Trail.
