As it’s only 16 miles inland from West Palm Beach, you might expect this Sunshine State spot to be all about shore life—but locals know it's more famous for horses.
Regarded as America’s equestrian capital, Wellington hosts several major sporting events each year for horse lovers. They include the Winter Equestrian Festival, where the world’s top riders compete over 12 weeks in show jumping and dressage; the Palm Beach Polo Season, which sees top polo players compete for four months; and the International Gay Polo Tournament. And for locals just wanting to ride, the village offers a 65-mile bridle trail system.
Residents wanting a break from all the horseplay can enjoy the many fine golf courses in the area or soak in the sun at Peaceful Waters Sanctuary, a 30-acre wetlands park that houses many of Florida’s native species. And just a short ride away is the coast, where fishermen can try their luck on Lake Worth Beach Park’s pier. Celebrity enthusiasts can hunker down on Palm Beach Municipal Beach, at the end of high-end shopping destination Worth Avenue.
Schools in the area receive high marks, with GreatSchools ranking 36% in the School District of Palm Beach County (which Wellington belongs to) above average. The Wellington area also offers a considerable number of assisted living facilities that Caring.com awarded above-average ratings to.—KR
