Thanks to its proximity to New York City, Teaneck has, for more than a century, proved a popular spot for city workers looking to make their homes in a quieter, greener, and more spacious area than the Big Apple would afford them.
While residents do face a hefty 40-minute commute on average, there are a wealth of public transit options to neighboring towns and NYC when they need to head into the office. Just minutes from the George Washington Bridge and the New Jersey Turnpike, Teaneck also accommodates those who prefer to drive. In return for their longer treks, locals tend to hold higher paying jobs than the typical American, with a median household income of $122,615.
In their own backyard, Teaneck residents can enjoy browsing stores within four main shopping areas; take in plays or art exhibitions at the Puffin Cultural Forum; enjoy the outdoors at 805-acre Overpeck County Park or the Teaneck Creek Conservancy; and explore the Hackensack River Greenway. The township is also home to several sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places that predate the Revolutionary War. And just two miles away, across the Hackensack River, is New Bridge Landing, a state park and historic site focused on commemorating early colonial life, the American Revolution, and its status as the scene of Gen. George Washington’s retreat in the aftermath of his troops’ defeat at the Battle of Fort Washington.
In addition, Teaneck’s public schools are well regarded, with GreatSchools finding that 93% of its students went on to graduate from high school.—KR
