Located in the southeastern corner of Arizona, about 20 miles north of the Mexican border, is the mountain city of Sierra Vista. Home to historic military base Fort Huachuca, Sierra Vista is a thriving community with a population of 43,000 that particularly appeals to families and lovers of the outdoors.
There’s no shortage of ways to explore its natural beauty. Locals can descend into Kartchner Caverns State Park to view the cavernous bat habitat; hike aboveground on the Arizona National Scenic Trail, an 800-mile path running north-south across the state; or take in the unique birds and archaeological sites of the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area. Known as the hummingbird capital of the U.S., Sierra Vista’s geography makes it a crossroads of sorts for more than 15 species of the bird, which residents can have a hand in banding at San Pedro House during the spring and fall migration periods. The region’s natural resources provide another blessing in the form of ample wineries and vineyards, making tours and events like the annual Wine, Beer & Spirits Fest an additional way to enjoy the bounty of nature here.
Another draw: Sierra Vista’s relatively affordable homes. The median sales price for a single-family home is $277,436—about 35% less than the median home sales price found across the state.—KR
